Jesus of Nazareth is one of the most complex persons known to history; and he is often misunderstood. To recover the historical Jesus we need to scrutinize the history of the time combining the results of many independent investigations. A new image of Galilee at the turn of the first century of our era is thus formed. This leads to reassess our understanding of Jesus’ message. It is undoubtable that one of the aims of Jesus was to propose an alternative society. He referred to this society as the Lordship of God in the world. His action was then geared to a transformation of society that was based on the profound change of the human being. This book dwell on the fact that Jesus proclaimed a gospel of social transformation. He wished his disciples to be social transformers. The social dimension of the gospel is underlined in recent papal documents. Today, in an age of global consciousness, the followers of Jesus ought to translate the gospel of social transformation into political and financial choices that go beyond local reach. A true social transformation will have to be tackled at local, but especially at international level. The North-South divide, the experience of on-going financial, cultural and political colonization, and other forms of seclusion of large swathe of people, require a concerted effort by all people of good will. Only in this way, the gospel of social transformation will come alive for the people of our age.

Gesù di Nazareth è una delle persone più complesse della storia; ed è spesso frainteso. Per recuperare il Gesù storico dobbiamo esaminare la storia combinando i risultati di molte indagini indipendenti. Si forma così una nuova immagine della Galilea all’inizio del primo secolo della nostra era. Ciò porta a rivalutare la nostra comprensione del messaggio di Gesù. È indubbio che uno degli obiettivi di Gesù fosse quello di proporre una società alternativa. Si riferiva a questa società come alla Signoria di Dio nel mondo. La sua azione era quindi orientata a una trasformazione della società che si basava sul profondo cambiamento dell’essere umano. Questo libro si sofferma sul fatto che Gesù proclamò un vangelo di trasformazione sociale. Desiderava che i suoi discepoli fossero trasformatori sociali. La dimensione sociale del vangelo è sottolineata nei recenti documenti papali. Oggi, in un’epoca di coscienza globale, i discepoli di Gesù sono chiamati a tradurre il vangelo della trasformazione sociale in scelte politiche e finanziarie che vadano oltre la portata locale. Una vera trasformazione sociale dovrà essere affrontata a livello locale, ma soprattutto internazionale. Il divario Nord-Sud, l’esperienza di colonizzazione finanziaria, culturale e politica in corso e altre forme di isolamento di ampie fasce di persone, richiedono uno sforzo concertato da parte di tutte le persone di buona volontà. Solo in questo modo, il vangelo della trasformazione sociale prenderà vita per le persone del nostro tempo.

L’autore. Giuseppe Caramazza ha un master in Missiologia (CTU – Chicago) e un PhD in Studi religiosi (CUEA – Nairobi). Missionario comboniano, ha lavorato in Kenya con particolare attenzione al mondo dei media, al mondo politico e all’insegnamento alla Tangaza University di Nairobi.
