The reality of the Church and the «Notes» of Vatican II. Luigi Sartori’s creative «reception»

The deep renewal represented and promoted by Vatican II updated the image of the Church and consequently gave origin to a new interpretation – more oriented towards witness and mission – of the «notes» that express it intimately. Luigi Sartori understood in an orthodox but creative way the new ecclesial face emerging from the complex reality of the council. Thanks to the experience of the years of ecumenical commitment – but not only thanks to it – he considers unity, holiness, catholicity and apostolicity in their mutual relations – he is well aware of the gap between the gift of God and the limits of human relations that express them. His hermeneutics is future-oriented, based on a solid faith in the action of the Holy Spirit on history, hopeful, respectful and charitable, ready to create a great ecclesial subject that may express the catholic unity of the different charisms within the Church, or better the mankind.

Father Albino Luciani’s contribution to “Ratio Studiorum” of the seminaries of Belluno and Feltre

On 7th April 1945, less than a year after his entrance in the dioceses of Belluno and Feltre, where the war was becoming crueler and crueler, the Bishop Girolamo Bortignon introduced to his superiors, to the professors and to the members of the disciplinary bodies of the dioceses a first draft of Ratio Studiorum that was destined for the inter-diocesan seminaries, the minor seminary of Feltre and the major seminary of Belluno. He invited them to examine it and to give a written reply, proposing them to correct and emend the text with the utmost liberty. Among the seven priests that replied there is one that does not write his name, does not write the date of his contribution and does not write the role he plays in the seminary. Who is he? From the examination of the texts, from the analysis of the notes, sometimes hand-written, it is clear that the author of the reply is the vice-rector and teacher Father Albino Luciani. One can legitimately say that in the definitive textbook of Ratio Studiorum of the seminaries of Belluno and Feltre, published in the first months of 1946, Father Luciani played a more important role than the one that has been attributed to him so far.

Letters between Giuseppe Sarto (later Pius X) and the Bishop Giuseppe Callegari

A long series of letters between Giuseppe Sarto (later Pius X) and Giuseppe Callegari, Bishop in Padua (later cardinal) testifies a thirty-year friendship from 1880 to 1906. This is the object of the study that has completed the collection of 147 letters that the future Pope sent to his faithful friend. These letters are very important from a historical point of view, not only because the interlocutors played a very important role in history, even if on different levels of the ecclesiastical hierarchy, but also because of the content of the letters: confessions and thoughts that future Pius X wrote to his friend in the years when Modernism was trying to divide the Church from the inside, with strong conflicts between compromising and uncompromising ones.

Dalla inculturazione alla interculturalità. II.

From inculturation to cross-culture. II. For a cross-cultural theology

In the first part of this contribution the value and limits of the category of inculturation have been highlighted. The most suitable ways to figure out a theology that might be open to the cross-cultural perspective must be explored. The theological research should in fact offer its contribution to eliminate the most ambiguous aspects of globalization and to promote the unity of mankind respecting the variety of its expressions.

This paper serves as an exploration of the varieties of the concept of «religion» by stressing the impossibility of the unique idea of religion as Christianity would like to propose. The Christian concept of religion is only one of the many concepts we know in the history. We have to recognize the Eurocentric character of Western World connected with Enlightenment, with western power and western idea of «rationalisation». I have tempted in this essay to show the many faces of the problem and to see how religions actually can not converge in the same concept.
